Brazilian Jiu-jitsu (BJJ) is a self-defense martial art for a much smaller person (woman or child) to handle unexpected aggression from a larger, stronger attacker, using technique and leverage, to enable a safe escape.
The first 6 sessions will include an introduction to BJJ taught by the first female blackbelt in Manitoba Christina Barry.
The first 3 sessions will include stand-up self-defense and you will learn how to:
- Appropriately handle aggressive behavior in a non-confrontational manner.
- De-escalate situations by using appropriate verbal statements.
- Look others in the eye and communicate effectively.
- Develop awareness and remain calm in strenuous situations.
- Self-defense techniques: defending various attacks and grabs, punches, kicks, and headlocks.
- Weapons defense and disarmament: defending knife, bat, gun, and overhand club attacks.
The next 3 sessions will include ground-based defense and you will learn:
- take-downs and throws
- submissions (armbars, chokes, shoulder locks, foot locks)
The next 2 sessions will provide an introduction to Muay Thai and you will learn how to throw technical kicks and punches, learn combinations, defense and counters and have fun hitting the pads.
The last session will be an open house demo to showcase to our family and friends everything the students have learned over the 10 weeks!
YOU WILL ACQUIRE THE FOLLOWING BENEFITS:
- Enhanced self-awareness, self-confidence, and self-discipline.
- Increase in physical fitness, balance, flexibility, and strength (mental and physical).
- Ability to defend yourself from unexpected aggression.
- New fighting skills!
